1.1 What is the FreeFAX service?

FreeFAX is a free internet service provided by Messagenet s.r.l., enabling its subscribers to receive fax in their mailbox.

Messagenet gives every subscriber a personal phone number, with a telephone area code chosen by the user.

FreeFAX is a free service, provided against the consent given by the subscriber to receive commercial information about products and services belonging either to MESSAGENET or to third parties.

FreeFAX service has a reception limit of 3 faxes per month. To exceed this limit the user can buy a FAXin pay service.

1.2 What is FAXin service?

FAXin service is similar to FreeFAX service, but has no limit in receiving faxes. Besides a FAXin subscriber will receive advertisement only for products or services belonging to MESSAGENET.

FAXin service includes an email support service, at the address support-fax@messagenet.it.

1.3 How much does FAXin service cost?

FAXin service has an activation fee of 18.00 €  (VAT included), and an annual fee of 60.00 €  (VAT included).

1.4 What happens if I exceed the limit of 3 faxes per month?

FreeFAX keeps delivering all the faxes exceeding the limit. However, on the first day of every month, the last month use of service will be counted. If this use exceeds the limit, the user is warned with an email message which asks him to subscribe to FAXin service.

The user has 15 days to subscribe to FAXin service, keeping, if he/she wants, his personal telephone number. During the 15 days the fax receiving service keeps on working in an unlimited way.

If the user doesn't subscribe within 15 days, MESSAGENET reserves the right to deactivate the FreeFAX account exceeding the limit, warning the user with an email message. The number can be reassigned to another user at any moment since its deactivation.

1.5 I subscribed to FreeFAX when the fax limit of 3 per month didn't exist. Do I also have any limit?

No.

Users who subscribed to FreeFAX before 28 January 2003 and have a personal telephone number with area code 02 or 06, haven't any limit for ingoing faxes. Users will be notified of any upcoming limit by email.

1.6 I subscribed to FreeFAX when this limit didn't exist, but afterwards I added a number outside Milan/Rome. What happens?

Milan or Rome numbers are still without any limit, while the added number is subjected to the above-mentioned limits. If limits exceed, the deactivation will be referred to the exceeding number and not to the entire FreeFAX account.

Limits are always and anyway valid for all the numbers activated after 28 January 2003.

1.7 What is FAXout service?

FAXout service enables you to send faxes from your browser or from your mailbox.

1.8 How much does FAXout service cost?

The service is pre-paid, reachargeable.

The user pays every fax PAGE actually delivered to the recipient; the page is subtracted from his available credit. Every page sent to an italian phone number costs 0.1080 €  (VAT included) .

1.9 Do FAXout recharges expire?

NO, never expire.

Fax receiving

2.1 How can I view received fax in my mailbox?

Faxes are sent as an (attachment) to an email message.

In most cases you just have to "double click" to view the received fax.

On Window systems you must install a software capable of opening TIFF file format images.

Imaging for Windows, usually installed by default on the operating system, works well for this purpose. To check if Imaging is installed, you can look for it in the Start menu, following the path:

Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Imaging

Other professional softwares, shareware or freeware, are also useful for the purpose.

We recommend you to check if the software you want to use supports the visualization of TIFF multipage images.

Otherwise, you will only be able to view the first fax page.

2.2 What equipment do I require to receive faxes in my email?

2.3 Can I convert a fax into a Word or text format?

No, the ingoing fax is an image and therefore it is not directly convertible into a text format.

Many softwares with character recognition (OCR) are available for sale, and they can be used to analyze the image file and convert it into a text format.

2.4 Can I install a filter on my email client, so that I have faxes separated from other messages?

Sure, the service has been realized, thinking about the organization of your mailbox.

Filter must always be set on the Subject containing the phrase "New fax for user [userid]".

2.5 I received a message with an .exe file attachment instead of a TIFF image. What can I do?

It means the message has been sent by an unauthorized person, beware!

Our service never sends executable attachments and is virus free.

2.6 I can't open the ingoing faxes because MS Outlook says the attachment is unsafe.

The files we send don't contain any virus, are safe and comply with the standards for email file attaching.

The problem you found is due to a recent upgrade of Microsoft applications resident in your system (for instance, Outlook in some configurations)

In order to bypass this limitation you just have to modify your Outlook client settings as follows:

  1. open Oulook;
  2. choose "Options" from the "Tools" menu;
  3. click "Protection";
  4. deselect the box "Do not allow saving or opening attachment that might be virus-infected".
  5. Click the "Apply" button to validate the change.

2.7 When I use Microsoft Office Document Imaging the fax is shown as a black line or part of a black line.

The error can be caused by the sender's fax machine.

Besides, "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" may open incorrectly some TIFF images of the delivered faxes.

In that event, in order to open your faxes we recommend you to use "Microsoft Imaging", a different application; after saving the TIFF image, open it with “Open with -> Imaging”.

2.8 Do received faxes occupy a lot of space on the disk?

Every page occupies a space amount between 10 Kbyte (pages with few text and a logo) and 100 Kbytes (brochure with a lot of text and graphics).

If you receive many faxes or hundreds of pages, you should check often the disk space availability.

2.9 I receive only one-page faxes, what happened?

There are two possibilities:

  1. you have not used your image viewer functions to "browse" through all the pages, that's why you only see the cover page
  2. the software you are using as a TIFF image viewer doesn't support multipage view.

2.10 Can I delete fax pages, or modify the image?

The images are standard TIFF files, so they can be elaborated depending on the functions of the viewer software you are using

2.11 How can I view my faxes using Alice webmail service?

[This explanation is valid also for Aruba and Technorail.]

2.12 The fax I have received is upside down, how can I read it?

It depends on the fax sender. It is a very common situation.

Any image management software has the "rotate" function.

If you can't use this function, print the fax like that and rotate the sheet.

Incredible as it may seem, you will be able to read it! ;-)

2.13 Some email messages show the sender's phone number in the field From, other ones show a text string, why?

When the fax is sent from a traditional fax machine, the sender's identification is intercepted.

When the fax has been sent using an outsourcing telematic fax service, like Unified Messaging services, the string corresponds to the service supplier.

2.14 Can I change the fax delivery mailbox?

Sure. Please go to the Control Panel and insert your UserID and Password. Now you can modify all registration data, including the fax delivery mailbox.

2.15 Can I change my Personal Telephone Number?

Yes.

2.16 Can I receive faxes in another file format, besides TIFF?

No, at he moment TIFF is the standard supported file format.

2.17 I have been trying to send a fax to my personal telephone number, but I don't receive anything. What should I do?

Firts of all, make sure that you dialed the correct number; then check if your mailbox is active and supports attachments transmission.

Forgive me if this is obvious, but many problems like yours were fixed in this way.

2.18 I can only receive some faxes, while other ones are not delivered.

This issue has been pointed out by some users, who can receive small-sized faxes (for example one page faxes), but have trouble receiving multipage faxes.

First check that your maibox doesn't have any size limit: in this case, you won't be able to receive neither heavy size attachments nor heavy graphic faxes.

2.19 I activated my Personal Telephone Number on Milan, now my city number is also active, can I change it?

Yes.

2.20 How much does calling a FreeFAX or FAXin number cost?

When you receive a fax you don't pay anything.

FreeFAX number is a normal telephone number, and the caller will be charged his operator's rate to reach that area code.

2.21 Can I send faxes in addition to receive them?

Yes, you must subscribe to FAXout service.

Fax sending

3.1 How can I send a fax?

You have two ways to send a fax: via email (read the next faq) o via web, going to the website www.messagenet.it and clicking the "fax" button.

This method is for an occasional use, when you have no access to your email client.

3.2 How can I send a fax via email?

To send a fax via email, you must compose an email message, addressed to the recipient's telephone number, followed by the proper domain "@fax.messagenet.it".

For instance, to send a fax to number 0248026819 you have to compose an email message addressed to:

0248026819@fax.messagenet.it

If you want to send a fax to more than one user, just indicate more fax numbers, each one followed by @fax.messagenet.it.
[for instance 021234567@fax.messagenet.it; 027654321@fax.messagenet.it]

MESSAGENET fax system will reply you in a few minutes with a loading notification message, then with a message notifying successful or unsuccessful fax delivery.

3.3 I have sent many faxes. How can I understand the association between the receipts I have received from the fax system and the fax I have sent?

When you send a fax, specify a key word in the field subject (object) of the outgoing message.

The loading and the notification messages related to every fax have the same subject (object) you specified when you sent the fax.

3.4 Does the recipient receive the mail subject?

No. If you want, you can write relevant information (from, to, subject, notes and so on) in the email message or in the first page of the attachment.

These information will be displayed on the fax first page.

3.5 What is the sending enabled address and what is it for?

The sending enabled address is an email address specified by the user when he has subscribed to FAXout.

A user can send faxes only from his outgoing address.

3.6 Can I send files attached to the outgoing mail?

You can attach to the outgoing mail the following file formats: Word (.doc e .docx), Excel (.xls) and PDF/Acrobat (.pdf).

You can't send other file formats (.exe .com .jpg .gif .tiff .bmp .pps .ppt ...)

MAC users, please remember to use Base64 code for the attachments.

3.7 Can I send TIFF image files?

Yes, but only if they are attachments received with FreeFAX e FAXin or if they comply with these features:

3.8 What is the "loading" mail message?"

After sending a fax, FAXout sends a mail to the user's outgoing address. This mail notifies that FAXout service received the mail which will be converted into a fax.

3.9 How is the successful fax delivery notified?

The fax delivery is notified by a mail sent to the user's outgoing address. The subject of the notification mail is an internal FAXout code.

3.10 What do the status codes mean?

The transmission reports show the final status, after several attempts, of the outgoing fax: "OK" confirms the successful fax delivery, "CANCELLED" the final cancellation of the fax transmission and its removal from the send queue.

3.11 Can I be notified by sms/text message?

No, at the moment you can't.

3.12 What if a fax doesn't arrive to destination?

The user receives a mail notifying the unsuccessful delivery of the fax.

3.13 Why can't I send a fax?

When you can't send us the email message via fax we will notify the error with an email message.

There can be many possible causes.

3.14 Can I change the email address specified for sending faxes?

Yes, after inserting your UserID and password just click on "Change FAX sending E.Mail".

3.15 Is it possible sending faxes to mobile number?

Since october 16th 2008, it isn't possible to send faxes to a mobile network. I fyou need this special opportunity, please contact us at support@messagenet.it.

3.16 How much does sending a fax cost?

4.1 I have lost my fax number...

Together with the fax number (Personal Telephone number), you are also given a UserID and a Password

If you forget your UserId and Password, please read the next FAQ.

You can view all your registration data, including your personal phone number, by going to the Personal area and inserting your UserID and Password

4.2 I have lost my fax number, my UserID and/or Password; how can I recover these data?

You can recover your Fax Number, your UserID and Password by going to the proper Control Panel page and providing your mail or your personal telephone number.

You will receive a mail(a FreeFAX registration mail) with a Fax Number, a UserId and a Pasword.

f you don't remember neither the email address you used to subscribe to FreeFAX nor your FreeFAX UserID and Password, please write to support-fax@messagenet.it providing all the data needed for your identification and a telephone number where we can reached you.

Obviuosly the verification procedure will be longer.

4.3 How can I change my anagraphical data?

Together with the fax number (Personal Telephone Number), you are given with a UserId and a Password.

You can modify all your registration data by going to the Control Panel area and inserting your UserID and Password

4.4 I haven't found any answer to my question.

Portabilità Numero Fax

Quali sono le condizioni per effettuare la portabilità del mio numero fax verso il servizio FAXin di Messagenet?

La Portabilità del Numero può essere effettuata solo se si è clienti di Telecom Italia per la linea dedicata al fax, in presenza di un solo numero su una linea analogica tradizionale o linea ISDN singola, in entrambi i casi senza che sulla linea fax sia presente fisicamente o contrattualmente una ADSL.

È necessario inoltre che la richiesta sia fatta dall'intestatario della linea e che tutte le bollette di Telecom Italia relative alla linea oggetto di Portabilità del Numero risultino pagate.

L'esattezza delle informazioni fornite è la migliore garanzia per una portabilità del numero veloce e priva di intoppi.

Trasferendo il numero da Telecom Italia a Messagenet, si perdono eventuali servizi aggiuntivi correlati alla linea.

Quali servizi fax devo attivare per avere la Portabilità del Numero con Messagenet?

La Portabilità del Numero è una opzione gratuita e aggiuntiva del servizio FAXin. Per ottenerla è quindi necessario attivare FAXin che permette di ricevere fax nella tua casella di posta elettronica senza alcuna limitazione, per un corrispettivo di 60 euro all'anno IVA inclusa (più 18 euro di attivazione).

Quanto tempo ci vuole per avere la Portabilità del Numero per il servizio FAXin?

Indicativamente tre settimane.

Come faccio a spedire i fax se, a seguito della Portabilità del Numero, non ho più la linea fax?

Con FAXout puoi inviare fax in tutto il mondo dalla tua casella di posta elettronica o dal web, pertanto puoi spedire i tuoi documenti direttamente dal computer senza doverli prima stampare.

Se si ha a disposizione uno scanner o una stampante multifunzione dotata di scanner, è anche possibile spedire con FAXout documenti che richiedono una compilazione manuale e/o una firma: basta creare dei documenti in formato pdf e poi spedirli dal computer, appunto, con FAXout.

FaxOut viene attivato automaticamente a tutti gli utenti registrati a Messagenet che acquistano una ricarica. Consulta le tariffe e le istruzioni. Inoltre, se hai una linea telefonica analogica tradizionale che utilizzi per fare e ricevere chiamate e hai tenuto l'apparecchio fax, puoi collegarlo a questa linea con una semplice spina, tenendo però l'apparecchio normalmente spento. Quando vuoi spedire un fax di un documento cartaceo, accendi l'apparecchio e spedisci nel solito modo. Ricordati di spegnere il fax quando ha avuto la conferma di spedizione.

È possibile portare il numero di Telecom Italia a Messagenet, mantenendo l'ADSL associata alla linea Telecom?

No, se sulla linea Telecom Italia è associato l'ADSL non è possibile attivare l'opzione Portabilità del Numero (vedi Termini e condizioni)

È possibile effettuare la Portabilità del Numero disponendo di una linea dati “Shared Access”?

No (vedi Termini e condizioni)

Dopo l'esecuzione della Portabilità del Numero posso continuare a ricevere fax sul numero geografico provvisorio di Messagenet?

No, non appena sarà effettuata la Portabilità del Numero, il numero provvisorio di Messagenet non sarà più utilizzabile e FAXin diventerà attivo sul tuo vecchio numero fax.

È possibile portare il numero di una linea ISDN di Telecom Italia a Messagenet?

Si, solo se si tratta di una linea ISDN singola sulla quale NON sia presente fisicamente o contrattualmente una ADSL.

È possibile portare il numero di una linea multidecadica-PRI di Telecom Italia a Messagenet?

No, la Portabilità del Numero può essere effettuata solo su linee tradizionali singole o ISDN singole di Telecom Italia.

Perché Messagenet può offrire la portabilità del numero?

La portabilità del numero è un servizio che Messagenet può fornire a richiesta e sotto specifiche condizioni in quanto operatore con autorizzazione generale per il servizio telefonico accessibile al pubblico sul territorio italiano rilasciata del Ministero delle Attività Produttive (settore Telecomunicazioni).

In che modo posso passare il mio numero fax a Messagenet?

Per attivare FAXin mantenendo il tuo numero fax, basta seguire questi semplici passi:

Non appena effettuato il pagamento, Messagenet ti invia tramite email un numero provvisorio, con lo stesso prefisso del tuo vecchio numero, e le istruzioni per poter cominciare a chiamare e a ricevere da subito.

All'arrivo dei documenti, Messagenet avvia la procedura per ottenere la Portabilità del Numero che richiede indicativamente 3 settimane e, non appena possibile, invia una email con la data effettiva di passaggio dal numero provvisorio al tuo vecchio numero. Dopo questa data il numero provvisorio di Messagenet non sarà più utilizzabile e FAXin diventerà attivo sul tuo vecchio numero.

Quali sono le Condizioni Generali di FAXin con la portabilità del numero?

Il canone e il contributo di attivazione devono essere corrisposti indipendentemente dal fatto che venga utilizzata o meno, oppure dal fatto che vada o meno a buon fine per motivi NON controllabili da Messagenet.
Messagenet è disponibile, su richiesta, al rimborso integrale del prezzo pagato per il servizio FAXin, solo nel caso in cui la prestazione di Portabilità del Numero non vada a buon fine e si siano verificate tutte le seguenti condizioni:

Messagenet non è responsabile nel caso in cui, in seguito alla effettuazione della Portabilità del Numero, vengano sospesi eventuali servizi ADSL, o vengano addebitati canoni aggiuntivi o in generale qualsiasi tipo di spesa associato al fatto che la linea ADSL non ha più la numerazione di appoggio. L'utente si impegna fin da ora a far fronte a tali eventuali costi aggiuntivi.
